The Mercury Silver Dime (also referred to as the Winged Liberty Silver Dime) began minting in 1916. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the Mercury Dime is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful U.S. coin designs ever produced. Because of the resemblance to the Roman god, Mercury, the coin became popularly known as the “Mercury Head” Dime. The obverse of this coin contains a portrait of Liberty wearing a winged cap symbolizing freedom of thought. The reverse blends a Roman fasces (an ax surrounded by a tied bundle of sticks) and an olive branch. The mintmark appears on the reverse, below and left of the fasces.
