The Jefferson Nickel began minting in 1938. Designed by Felix Schlag, the obverse of this coin honors the nation’s 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson. Arranged around the border is the motto “In God We Trust” to the left, and the word “Liberty” with the date to the right, separated by a single star. On the reverse is a front elevation view of Jefferson’s home, with the name “Monticello” beneath it. Around the border are the legends “E Pluribus Unum” (Out of Many, One) above, and “United States of America” below. Beneath Monticello is the value “Five Cents”. Beginning in 1966, Schlag’s initials “FS” appear below the truncation of Jefferson’s bust.
Jefferson Nickels are sold in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, 40 coins per roll.
