The Silver Certificate authorized on February 28, 1878, was the nations second longest issued paper money series. As the name suggests these notes were backed by the U.S. Governments stockpile of silver. They could be redeemed for silver at the Treasury. The life of this series ended when its silver redemption provisions were drawn to a halt on June 24, 1968.
