National Currency was introduced during the Civil War. The purpose of these notes was to replace the often worthless private currency that had been issued by many banks and corporations until it was stopped in 1865. These notes can be identified by the presence of the words "National Currency" within the border on the front side of the note, and the presence of a specific bank of issue imprint. Also identified is the banks city and state.
