Authentic “Turn of the Century” stone lithograph prints ... prints that can never be reproduced or duplicated!
These actual prints represent the last remaining “artifacts” of the lost art of stone lithography which began around 1860! Although almost none of these prints displayed the word “cigars,” they are commonly referred to as cigar box labels. The care, skill and artistry that went into the creation of these antique prints shows in every detail ... it was a laborious process to produce a single stone litho print. The artists had to prepare a separate stone for each color that was used in their intricate designs ...usually 8 to 10 colors, but some required as many as 22 stones. The stones were then arranged to correctly reproduce the design on the paper. To give the prints a three-dimensional effect, embossing became popular in the 1890s. Gold leaf was then applied and polished to a gleam. The stone lithography process ended in the 1930s, due to its high production costs and the introduction of modern printing methods. This is your oppotunity to discover the rare and beautiful art of stone lithography!
