Liberty Seated Half Dollars

1840-1878

The Liberty Seated Half Dollar was designed by Christian Gobrecht and minted in Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco and Carson City.

The obverse design of the Seated Liberty coinage depicts the figure of Lady Liberty dressed in a flowing garment and seated upon a rock. In her left hand, she holds a pole surmounted by a liberty cap. Lady Libertys right hand is rested on the top corner of a striped shield with a diagonal banner inscribed with the word "Liberty." The shield represented preparedness in the defense of freedom. The date of the coin appears on the bottom.
