Designed by James B. Longacre, the three-cent pieces struck in nickel were designed to replace the silver three-cent coins. The three-cent nickel was only struck at the Philadelphia Mint, and except for a larger date on the 1889 pieces, had no design differences throughout its history. Over the course of the series mintage declined and some of the dates became scarce. The coin features a Liberty head on the obverse and a Roman numeral III on the reverse.
