Silver certificates could be redeemed for silver dollars and silver bullion. The U.S. Treasury Department stopped the redemption of silver dollars in 1964 and discontinued silver bullion redemption on June 24, 1968. When these certificates were turned in for silver they were destroyed. This created a scarcity of the remaining silver certificates in all grades, particularly Almost Uncirculated and Crisp Uncirculated.
This bill is sold in a deluxe currency protective sleeve.
